Poland has the highest unidentified offshore wind potential in the Baltic Sea, Janusz Gajowiecki, President of the Polish Wind Energy Association (PWEA) said during a session at the Global Wind Summit in Hamburg.

In his opening remarks during the session titled Offshore wind opportunities in Poland, Gajowecki added that Poland’s offshore wind conditions in the Baltic Sea are on par with that of Denmark or Germany.

”Nobody knows, without a detailed study, the true potential of the Polish Baltic Sea,” Gajowiecki said.

According to a report issued this year by the Foundation for Sustainable Energy (FNEZ), Poland could have 4GW of installed offshore wind capacity in the Baltic Sea by the end of 2030 and 8GW by the end of 2035.

The first project with a capacity of 600MW could most likely be connected to the grid in 2025, FNEZ said.

Polish offshore wind has started attracting the attention of major energy companies such as Norway’s Equinor who earlier this year agreed to develop two offshore wind projects in the Polish Baltic Sea with a combined capacity of 1,200MW in partnership with Polenergia.
