Germany’s ruling coalition has agreed to issue a special call to tender for additional renewable energy capacity, including offshore wind, by the end of October.
According to a statement issued by the coalition of CDU, CSU and SPD, additional four gigawatts of onshore wind and photovoltaic capacity, as well as an unspecified amount of offshore wind capacity, are to be tendered in 2019 and 2020.
The coalition has also agreed to raise the country’s renewable energy target to 65% by 2030.
The agreement comes shortly after Germany’s five Northern states and the industry representatives called for additional tenders of up to 1.5GW to utilise the unused offshore grid capacities in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.
The Call for Wind Energy urges the government to increase the current offshore wind capacity target from 15GW in 20GW by 2030 and 30GW by 2035 in order to meet the country’s newly set renewable energy target.
