Hellenic Cables has signed a contract with Vos Prodect Innovations for the design and delivery of sealed cable hang-off systems for the Modular Offshore Grid (MOG) in Belgium.

The Greece-based cable manufacturer is delivering a 220kV AC submarine cable for the project under a contract with DEME Group that is in charge of the supply, installation and maintenance of the submarine power cables for MOG.

According to Vos Prodect, Hellenic Cables’s 220kV AC submarine cable the biggest diameter ever for which the company will deliver a hang-off system.

The contract also includes testing to verify the system in terms of project-specific load and sealing requirements. The testing programme will be carried out at Vos Prodect’s facility in the Netherlands.

The Modular Offshore Grid, developed by Belgian transmission system operator Elia, will connect four offshore wind farms to the Belgian grid: Rentel, Northwester 2, and Seamade (formerly Mermaid and Seastar).

MOG includes an Offshore Switchyard Platform (OSY) located about 40km off the Zeebrugge coast, to which the four wind farms will be connected, with the export submarine cables linking the OSY to a substation in Belgium.

One 220kV power cable will be installed along a 4,5km route between the OSY and Rentel’s platform, and two 220kV submarine power cables of approximately 39km each will be installed from the OSY to the onshore connection point located on the beach in Zeebrugge.

The Modular Offshore Grid is scheduled to be operational in the third quarter of 2019.
