German-Danish Offshore Wind Link Comes to Life

The Kriegers Flak – Combined Grid Solution has reached another milestone after Germany’s 50Hertz and Denmark’s Energinet completed the 24 hours tests on both of the offshore cables connecting the Danish platform on the Kriegers Flak wind farm with the German platform on the Baltic 2.

One after another, the two cables „150-kV-line KFE-BaZ 155“ and „150-kV-line KFE-BaZ 156“ were energised and are now ready to transport the electricity, 50Hertz said.

“Everyone in the team, from NKT, our colleagues from the Regional Center North, the platform operator EnBW and the Danish TSO ENERGINET, worked closely together and delivered to-the-point. We are very happy and celebrate this success together,” said Sebastian Wagner , Sub-Project Manager Sea cables 50Hertz.

The Kriegers Flak – Combined Grid Solution (CGS) project will establish the world’s first offshore interconnection by linking the Danish and the German transmission grids in combination with the infrastructure of offshore wind farm grid connections.

The European Commission has designated the interconnection as a Project of Common Interest (PCI). Additionally, the interconnector project is subsidised by the European Energy Programme for Recovery.

The Kriegers Flak A and the Kriegers Flak B substations will collect the power generated by Vattenfall’s 605MW Kriegers Flak offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea and deliver it to the mainland.

The Kriegers Flak E module, part of the KFB substation, will provide the link between the Danish and the German grid and enable the exchange of renewably sourced power.
