Roll Group has developed a detachable base frame for the onshore transport of transition pieces using its self-propelled modular transporter (SPMT).

According to the Dutch company, the frame is designed so it allows the transport to be carried out at ground level and avoids the need for heavy crawler cranes.

The concept, developed in close collaboration with manufacturers and marshaling ports, features lower suspended girders that are adjustable to adapt to the desired dimensions depending on the diameter or support positions of the transition pieces, Roll Group said.

The first system is designed for a maximum weight of 600t and will be operated by 28 axle lines of SPMT, maneuvering on a footprint of some 20x15m.

Acting on the demand from the market, Roll Group said it is currently working on a light version of the transition piece handler which will support up to 350t.

The company said that the detachable base frame has a minimal impact on the storage area with its vertical gate and allows the SPMT to be deployed for other activities.
