The marine renewable energy (MRE) hub being built in France’s Port of Brest has reached an important milestone after a 900-metre dike was connected to a wharf.

The reclaimed area between the dike and the wharf will be filled out by dredged sediments in two stages, from October 2019 to April 2020, and then during the winter of 2020/2021. The area will be available for use in 2024 after the drying and soil strengthening works.

The 400-metre wharf, on the other hand, will be available for use in Spring 2020.

The wharf will be used by Ailes Marines, the developer of the 496MW Bay of Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm, for partial construction of the wind farm’s 62 jacket foundations, the Port of Brest said.

According to the port, three French and international manufacturers are competing to build the wind farm’s foundations and have visited the construction site.

Ailes Marines, a joint venture between Iberdrola, RES and Caisse des Dépôts, is expected to select the manufacturer of the jacket foundations in early 2019.
