Rhenus Offshore Logistics has won the tender to provide the supply logistics for TenneT’s BorWin gamma HVDC platform in the German North Sea.

Rhenus will be conducting the supply runs using the Eurus Express vessel from the offshore base in the Port of Emden until the end of the project.

The company will also be in charge of coordinating all the logistics activities, storage, loading and unloading operations, securing the offshore containers, handling all customs activities for import and export purposes, as well as completing the IMO declaration.

“We’ll be operating our own container depot with DNV 2.7-certified offshore containers at our offshore supply base at Emden. As a result, we’ll be able to respond to the demands of the project spontaneously and save the customer mobilisation and demobilisation costs for the equipment,” said Jennifer Adami , Project Manager for BorWin gamma at Rhenus Project Logistics.

During the installation work, Rhenus will supply the employees living and working on the 900MW platform with the necessary tools and building materials, as well as food, water and other items in daily use.

The Bremen-based company said it will also ship any waste from containers when returning from the site. REMONDIS, Rhenus’ affiliated company, will handle and complete the disposal of the rubbish.

“Shared supply runs have a clear advantage – significant savings for the customers, as goods for several platforms are directly loaded on board at the port and can then be supplied one after the other to the various facilities offshore. Customers have to adapt to the delivery time, but obtain significant cost reductions in return,” said Thore Schreiber , Head of Business Development and Sales at Rhenus.

The installation of BorWin gamma was finalized in October 2018, after the platform completed its journey from the United Arab Emirates to the site some 130km from the island of Borkum.

The grid connection is scheduled to be fully commissioned this year when it will start delivering the power generated by offshore wind farms to the German grid.
