The Hornsea Project One offshore wind farm is awaiting the last two monopile foundations to be installed as 172 out of 174 have been put in place.

GeoSea’s installation vessel Innovation installed the first monopile at the project in January 2018 and thus marked the beginning of offshore construction.

EEW SPC produced all the monopile foundations for the wind farm, with EEW OSB manufacturing 86, Bladt Industries 68, and Steelwind Nordenham with the Teesside-based Wilton Engineering 20 transition pieces.

The first Siemens Gamesa 7MW turbine was recently installed at the site some 120km off the Yorkshire coast in the UK, shortly after which it produced first power.

Turbine installation is expected to continue until late summer and, once fully operational in 2020, Hornsea Project One will become the largest offshore wind farm in the world.

“It’s amazing to think that just over a year ago we began offshore construction on Hornsea One, and now, 120km off the coast, it has already started to generate clean electricity,” said Duncan Clark , Project Director for Hornsea Project One and Two.

“There is still a long way to go, 173 turbines to be precise! But I’m confident we will continue to work to the high standards already demonstrated by the teams involved, and together deliver the biggest renewable energy project in the UK, helping to deliver a cleaner, greener energy system for the future.”
