THEMA Consulting Group, in cooperation with COWI and EA Energy Analyses, has conducted a study on offshore wind potential in the Baltic Sea and the barriers to its development.

Carried out for the European Commission, the study identifies potential offshore wind sites and examines the impacts of different levels of both offshore wind deployment and regional cooperation on the power and transmission system.

According to THEMA, the study identifies barriers to the efficient deployment of offshore wind in the region and provides initial recommendations on how an initiative might seek to address these.

The research was conducted because governments of EU countries bordering the Baltic Sea are currently considering options to support the development of offshore wind in the region through work on the Baltic Energy Market Interconnection Plan (BEMIP), THEMA said.

The parties will present the study and recommendations for a roadmap for offshore wind development in the Baltic Sea at a stakeholder workshop taking place as part of the BEMIP project.

The event, organized by the European Commission and the BEMIP renewable energy working group, will take place on 15 March in Brussels, Belgium.

Representatives of the Member States’ governments will attend the event, while stakeholders are invited to comment on proposals for the future roadmap and work plan.
