Equinor has shown interest in developing floating offshore wind in Greece, a spokesperson from the company confirmed to Offshore WIND .
According to Equinor, such a development will require that the Greek authorities open areas and production licenses for offshore wind and that a remuneration system is put in place.
The proposed offshore wind farm would be built between the islands of Tinos, Syros and Mykonos, local media reported.
“Equinor is hopeful that there will be a business case for floating for offshore wind in Greece,” the spokesperson said. “ The floating offshore wind is happening now and Greece should act quickly to take a leading position.”
With its excellent wind conditions offshore, deep waters and strong industrial/yard and maritime tradition, Greece is well positioned to become an important area for floating offshore wind, the Norwegian company said.
Equinor also added that the country will need offshore wind to meets its renewables target outlined in the Energy and Climate Plan submitted to the EU.
Reportedly, the management of Equinor’s renewables division will arrive in Athens on 12 April to present the investment proposal, while Norway’s Ambassador Jorn Gjelstad has already discussed the project with the Greek Ministry of Environment Energy and Climate Change.
To remind, Equinor is the owner of the world’s first commercial-scale floating offshore wind farm, the 30MW Hywind Scotland project.
