NKT has commissioned the 170kV high-voltage cable system at the Kriegers Flak Combined Grid Solution (CGS) connecting Denmark and Germany.

According to NKT, the work on the CGS cable connecting the Kriegers Flak and Baltic 2 offshore wind farms was completed on schedule and on budget.

The high-voltage cable system connects the Danish region of Zealand with the German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania via the two offshore wind farms in the Baltic Sea.

The project allows Energinet in Denmark and 50Hertz in Germany to raise the bar for the connection of national power grids by connecting offshore wind farms and an interconnector power link, NKT added.

“We are proud to be part of the innovative project connecting Denmark and Germany. It is an important step that strengthens the transmission security and the ability to share the capacity of renewable energy across Europe,” said Andreas Berthou , Executive Vice President and Head of High-Voltage Solutions in NKT.

NKT is also providing the 220kV HVAC cable system connecting the Kriegers Flak wind farm to the Danish onshore power grid which is expected to be taken into operation later this year.

The Kriegers Flak CGS is the world’s first offshore interconnector using the national grid connections of offshore wind farms to connect the power grids of Denmark and Germany.

Two offshore cables of the CGS were installed in July last year, connecting the platform of the Kriegers Flak project with the platform at the Baltic 2 offshore wind farm.
