Prysmian Group has secured a circa EUR 140 million contract by TenneT to provide cables for the DolWin5 grid connection project in the German North Sea.

Prysmian will supply, install and commission an HVDC 320 kV XLPE-insulated submarine and land power cable connection, with a 900MW transmission capacity, and the associated fiber optic cable system, including a 30km land and 100km subsea route.

The connections will link the offshore converter platform DolWin epsilon from some 100km offshore to the mainland Emden/Ost converter station.

Prysmian will manufacture the submarine and land cables at its centers located in Pikkala, Finland, and Gron, France.

Offshore installation activities will be carried out by cable laying vessels Cable Enterprise for deepwater installation and Ulisse for shallow water activities. The completion of the project is scheduled for the middle of 2024.

“The Dolwin5 project continues our valued long relationship with the major TSO TenneT and demonstrates our ability to provide tailor-made submarine cable solutions for challenging projects, providing the offshore infrastructure needed to support the growth of clean energy in Northern Europe,” said Hakan Ozmen , EVP Projects, Prysmian Group.

DolWin5 will be installed in the DolWin cluster and will collect the electricity generated at three offshore wind farms and feed it into the German national grid.

The Aibel/Keppel FELS consortium will supply the HVDC platform and an onshore converter station of DolWin5. ABB will supply the complete HVDC electrical power system for the 900MW platform.
