NKT has received an order from Energinet and National Grid to supply onshore cables for the 1,400MW Viking Link interconnector between Denmark and the United Kingdom.

The contract is valued at around EUR 90 million and will see NKT deliver approximately 150 kilometres of 525kV MI high-voltage DC onshore power cables.

The power cable system, not comprising civil works, delivered by NKT constitutes the approximately 75-kilometre connection of the project from Danish shore to the power grid substation in Revsing, southern Jutland.

The contract value is conditional upon procurement and contract finalization, which is expected during the third quarter of 2019.

”I am pleased that we are selected as power cables supplier to Viking Link, which is a key project for the North-European transformation towards renewable energy supplies. The award is a recognition of our technological competences also in the growing extra high-voltage interconnector segment from Energinet and National Grid,” NKT Interim CEO Roland M. Andersen said.

The NKT power cables will be manufactured in Karlskrona, Sweden, with production start expectedly in 2020.

When completed, Viking Link will be a 760km long DC interconnector line between Revsing in southern Jutland, Denmark, and Bicker Fen in Lincolnshire, UK. The interconnector line is expected to be fully commissioned in 2023.
