Siemens has secured a contract to provide substation products and digital control and protection equipment for the Vineyard Wind offshore substation.
The components, ordered by Semco Maritime, include 18 gas-insulated high-voltage switchgear (GIS) bays, two shunt reactors, two generation-step-up-transformers, and two earthing / auxiliary transformers along with digital control and protection equipment (SCADA). The components will be delivered by Siemens Transmission Products.
Besides the switching components, Siemens will also manufacture two generator-step-up transformers at 450 MVA that transform the voltage generated up to 220kV transmission level and two earthing / auxiliary transformers. Two 170 MVA shunt reactors for the 220kV level will compensate the reactive power. The scope also includes digital control & protection equipment, delivered by Siemens Digital Grid.

As reported earlier, Vineyard Wind LLC selected the consortium of Bladt Industries, Semco Maritime, and ISC Engineering to manufacture and deliver the substation for the 800MW project. Semco Maritime is in charge of providing the electrical system for the substation.
The Vineyard Wind offshore wind farm will comprise 84 MHI Vestas 9.5MW wind turbines sited approximately 14 miles south of Martha’s Vineyard and 35 miles off the coast of the Massachusetts mainland.
Offshore construction is expected to start this year and the wind farm is scheduled to be operational in 2022.
Vineyard Wind LLC is a joint venture between Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and Avangrid Renewables.
