James Fisher Marine Services (JFMS) has started the preparatory work on clearing the site of the Triton Knoll offshore wind project in the UK.

As reported, JFMS secured a contract in March to carry out unexploded ordnance (UXO) removal and boulder clearance at the 145km2 site offshore Lincolnshire.

According to the company, the work is likely to be significant because Lincolnshire was dubbed Bomber County during the Second World War as the bulk of the UK’s bombing force was based there and many were forced to drop unused bombs into the sea close to the coast when returning from missions.

The work will use several vessels and crews together with a number of east coast ports, including Grimsby, to be involved.

Better Risk is providing UXO risk management support, with Ordtek providing UXO consultancy services for the project.

Triton Knoll , owned by innogy, J-Power and Kansai Electric Power, will feature 90 MHI Vestas 9.5MW turbines. The 860MW project is scheduled to enter the offshore construction phase in the first quarter of 2020.
