The UK’s Labour Party has reaffirmed its offshore wind commitment in its General Election manifesto, claiming it will build 7,000 new turbines in UK waters.

In September, the Labour Party announced it plans to build 37 new offshore wind farms with a 51% publicly owned stake in the UK.

Under the People’s Power Plan, the party would deliver 52GW of offshore wind by 2030, leading to a total of GBP 83 billion of government and private sector funding being invested along the UK coastline, in partnership with private and foreign public companies.

In the General Election manifesto, the UK party pledges to delivery nearly 90% of electricity and 50% of heat from renewable and low-carbon sources by 2030.

It stated that it will stop all aid spending on fossil fuel production overseas, redirecting it towards clean, renewable energy.

Furthermore, the Labour party plans to nationalize the National Grid and replace it with a new UK National Energy Agency which would own and maintain the national grid infrastructure and oversee the delivery of decarbonization targets.

“This election is the last opportunity to take the vital action to head off runaway climate change,” said Leader of the Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn . “Labour will bring the country together to face a common challenge and mobilise all our national resources, both financial and human, to kick-start a Green Industrial Revolution.”

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson recently pledged to increase the UK’s 2030 offshore wind target from the current 30GW to 40GW if his Conservative party wins the general election.

The UK’s General Election will take place on 12 December.
