Italian offshore energy contractor Saipem will manufacture and deliver 32 wind turbine jacket foundations for the 376MW Formosa 2 offshore wind farm in Taiwan.

As reported earlier, Jan De Nul, the EPCI contractor for the project’s foundations and subsea cables, selected Saipem and Sembcorp to deliver the pile jacket foundations for the wind farm.

At the time, Jan De Nul did not disclose exactly how many jackets each company will make, saying only that all of the jacket components will be manufactured in Asia, and that the pin piles will be fabricated by EEW SPC. The jacket foundations will be installed by Seaway 7.

Formosa 2 will comprise 47 Siemens 8MW turbines installed in water depths of up to 55 metres. The wind farm is being developed by a partnership between Macquarie’s Green Investment Group and Swancor Renewable Energy, offshore Miaoli County on the West coast of Taiwan. Construction works for the project are scheduled to commence in early 2020.

Combined with the recently won contract for the Neart na Gaoithe offshore wind farm in Scotland, Saipem’s offshore wind work is expected to bring the company approximately EUR 750 million and is representing more than 15% of the company’s E&C Offshore Division order intake year-to-date.

“This EPCI contract awarded by EDF Renewables marks a key milestone in the pursuit of our strategy to become a reference player for large offshore windfarm developments and, more extensively, in the sphere of energy transition,” Francesco Racheli , Chief Operating Officer of the Saipem E&C Offshore Division, said.

”This important achievement has been made possible thanks to our capabilities and expertise in engineering, fabrication and installation as well as to our assets, particularly suited to projects of this kind. Our collaboration with EDF Renewables and with the entire supply chain will allow us to contribute to the generation of 450 megawatts of green energy, fostering the utilisation of local supply chain and expertise to provide the most competitive solution to our stakeholders and clients and execute a successful project.”
