Ørsted has signed a contract with Trelleborg for the provision of four integrated cable protection systems for the 1.4GW Hornsea Two offshore wind farm.

Trelleborg will deliver its NjordGuard cable protection system that will be used to protect the inter-array cables from fatigue, over-bending and abrasion at the entry point of the monopiles.

Design, testing and manufacture of the cable protection system will be done at Trelleborg’s manufacturing facility in the North of England.

Project engineering works will commence immediately, with installation activities scheduled for execution in 2021, the company states.

“In our continued bid to support and promote a strong national supply chain, we are pleased that Trelleborg’s product will be made locally in the North of England,” said Patrick Harnett , Senior Programme Director for Hornsea Two.

NjordGuard is an integrated cable protection system that can be easily configured and is suitable for any diameter of cable, Trelleborg said, adding that NjordGuard can be easily installed, removed and reused without the need for Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) or diver intervention, using a ball and groove connector technology.

In November 2019, Trelleborg and Ørsted signed an agreement for the NjordGuard cable protection system to be used at the Greater Changhua 1 & 2a offshore wind project in Taiwan.

Hornsea Two is located 89 kilometres north-east of Grimsby in the UK and will comprise 165 Siemens Gamesa 8MW wind turbines. The 1.4GW offshore wind farm is scheduled to be commissioned in 2022.
