The first batch of wind turbines for the Yunlin offshore wind farm is on its way from Denmark to Taiwan.

The components for Siemens Gamesa’s 8 MW wind turbines have been loaded onto the UHL Falcon vessel in Aalborg.

Scan Global Logistics is in charge of the transportation of the main wind turbine components to Taiwan. The logistics company will ship all the 44 wind turbines for the first phase of the Yunlin project.

Meanwhile, Fred. Olsen Windcarrier’s vessel Brave Tern is also on its way to Taiwan to start the wind turbine installation for the project’s first phase.

Siemens Gamesa contracted Fred. Olsen Windcarrier for the installation of 80 of its 8 MW wind turbines at the Yunlin project site in March 2019.

Yunlin Phase 1, with a capacity of 352 MW, is due to be online by the end of this year. The 288 MW second phase should be up and running in the third quarter of 2021.

Siemens Gamesa received the turbine supply order for the 640 MW Yunlin offshore wind farm in June 2019. The contract also includes a 15-year long-term service agreement and represents the first firm order for the SG 8.0-167 DD turbines in Asia Pacific.

The Yunlin offshore wind farm is located in the Taiwan Strait, some eight kilometres west of the coast of Yunlin County. It will cover an overall area of approximately 90 square kilometers.

The Yunlin project is one of eleven offshore wind projects the Taiwanese government selected under the feed-in tariff (FIT) programme. In 2020, about 350 MW must be connected to the grid, with the remaining part following in 2021.
