EEW’s manufacturing facilities in Asia have produced half of the total of 188 pin piles for Taiwan’s Formosa 2 offshore wind farm.
Formosa 2 will comprise 47 jacket foundations, with each jacket secured to the seabed with four pin piles. Each pin pile is up to 78.9 metres long, has an outside diameter of 2.4 metres, and weighs up to 280 tonnes.
Jan De Nul, the EPCI contractor for the project’s foundations and subsea cables, selected Saipem and Sembcorp to deliver the pile jacket foundations in October 2019.
EEW was then subcontracted to supply the pin piles, which are being manufactured by EEW Korea, EEW KHPC and EEW Malaysia.
All of the jacket components are being manufactured in Asia, according to earlier information from Jan De Nul.
In May 2020, the company announced it had chosen the Port of Taichung as a logistics and operations hub for the 376 MW project.
Seaway 7 is in charge transportation, pre-piling and installation of the jacket foundations.
The Formosa 2 offshore wind farm will feature 47 Siemens Gamesa 8 MW wind turbines, installed some four to ten nautical miles off Miaoli County, in water depths of up to 55 metres.
The project – developed by a partnership between JERA, Macquarie’s Green Investment Group, and Swancor Renewable Energy – is expected to be commissioned next year.
