MingYang Offshore-Tested Energy Storage System Hits the Market

Shenzhen Quant-Cloud Energy Network Technology, a subsidiary of MingYang Smart Energy Group, has installed its energy storage system at a wind farm for the first time, following demonstration on MingYang’s turbine at the Xinghua Bay offshore wind farm.

The system has been commissioned and put into operation at the 43.2 MW coastal Huian Quanhui wind farm in Quanzhou, Fujian Province. This represents the first batch application of the energy storage system on a wind farm in the typhoon zone, after it was tested on MingYang’s MySE5.5MW typhoon-proof offshore wind turbine, the company said.

The coastal wind energy resources where the 43.2 MW project is located are abundant but also prone to frequent typhoons, according to MingYang.

When there is a power outage caused by typhoon, the wind turbine yaw systems need to maintain normal operation to prevent excessive load caused by the failure of active yawing. The backup power supply can ensure continuous operation of the yaw system in extreme cases of power failure and reduce the load of the turbine.

Compared with a diesel generator, the energy storage system MingYang has introduced is environmentally friendly and more safe, the company states. Placed inside a turbine tower, the system is cost-effective as it does not require foundation construction and is more convenient for operation and maintenance with its anti-corrosion and intelligent control features, among others.

In April 2020, MingYang revealed plans to develop a 10 MW typhoon-resistant floating wind turbine.

The company will invest around CNY 725 million (EUR 94 million) in the project, some CNY 616 million of which will come through a private placement of A shares.
