Hung Hua Construction (HHC) has transported the first batch of twelve pin piles for Taiwan Power Company’s Changhua Phase 1 offshore wind farm from South Korea to Taiwan, following an almost two-month delay in operations due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The company, contracted by Jan De Nul for the transport of jacket foundations, loaded the pin piles at the end of April at a South Korean yard managed by Edgen Murray, the manufacturer of the pin piles for the project.

The first batch was finally brought to Taiwan on 13 June by the AHT Orient No. 8 and the DF Buffalo barge, owned by HHC and operated by its subsidiary DongFang Offshore.

HHC has six more batches to transport from South Korea, where Edgen Murray, in collaboration with South Korea’s SeAH, completed the manufacturing of 80 pin piles for the project at the beginning of April.

The four remaining pin piles for the 21-turbine project will be delivered by the Taiwanese steel fabricator Ming Rong Yuan Business.

HHC loaded the first jackets , also in South Korea, in the second half of May. The jacket foundations will be shipped from Samkang’s fabrication yard to Taiwan in five batches.

The 109.2 MW Changhua Phase 1 project, located off the coast of Fangyuan in Central Western Taiwan, will comprise 21 5.2 MW offshore wind turbines on four-legged jacket foundations.

The Changhua offshore wind farm contract was awarded to the Jan De Nul-Hitachi consortium in April 2018.

Jan De Nul is responsible for the design, fabrication and installation of the foundations, the installation of the wind turbines, the supply and installation of the onshore and offshore cables, as well as for the upgrading of the substation.

Hitachi is in charge of manufacturing, assembly, operation and maintenance, and other works related to the offshore wind turbines.

The offshore wind farm is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.
