Four Formosa 2 pin piles lined up at the Port of Taichung

The first batch of pin piles for the Formosa 2 jacket foundations have been offloaded at the Port of Taichung and are now waiting for installation, which is about to start soon.

Each of the pin piles – produced by EEW Korea, EEW KHPC and EEW Malaysia – is up to 78.9 metres long, has an outside diameter of 2.4 metres, and weighs up to 280 tonnes.

In October 2019, Jan De Nul was selected as the EPCI contractor for the project’s foundations and subsea cables.

The company later subcontracted EEW to produce the pin piles, Saipem and Sembcorp to deliver the jacket foundations, and Seaway 7 to install both at the Formosa 2 project site, located off the coast of Miaoli County in northwestern Taiwan.

Jan De Nul has also subcontracted several locally headquartered companies, including Hunghua Construction, which is in charge of transporting the foundation piles from the Port of Taichung to the offshore construction site, together with other local companies including Taiwan International Ports, Ta Jia International, Jin An Logistics International, and Glory Shipping Agency Corporation.

The construction on the Formosa 2 project started in June, with onshore and nearshore works for the landfall site.

The 376 MW wind farm, developed by a partnership between JERA, Macquarie’s Green Investment Group, and Swancor Renewable Energy, will comprise 47 Siemens Gamesa 8 MW turbines installed in water depths of up to 55 metres.

Formosa 2 is expected to be commissioned in 2021.
