Polish Utility Lays Out 6.5 GW Offshore Wind Target

Polish energy company PGE plans to develop 6.5 GW of offshore wind capacity in the Baltic Sea as part of the strategy to become climate neutral by 2050.

As part of its transformation plan, PGE intends to build two offshore wind farms with a combined capacity of 2.5 GW by 2030.

The utility said that the large-scale projects, which also include onshore wind and photovoltaics, will be accompanied by a complementary energy storage programme of at least 0.8 GW.

Beyond 2030, PGE plans to develop further 4 GW of offshore wind capacity.

The current generation portfolio of the PGE Group is over 80 per cent based on hard coal and lignite.

Through the new strategy, PGE plans to increase the share of renewable energy in its portfolio to 50 per cent by 2030 and to 100 per cent by 2050.

”We know that the energy transition is a multidimensional process, therefore the construction of the RES market share, apart from large-scale investments, will be strengthened by long-term cooperation with our Customers,” said Wojciech Dąbrowski , President of the Management Board of PGE.

”We recognize their desire to be independent and active market participants. Therefore, using our competence and experience, we will meet their needs: we will implement offers based on long-term cooperation, providing them with access to green energy, create favourable conditions for power generation in microinstallations and provide reliable distribution services enabling the development of distributed energy and energy storage facilities.”

PGE is in the final stage of negotiations with Ørsted to jointly develop the 1 GW Baltica 3 and the 1.5 GW Baltica 2 offshore wind farms.

Baltica 2 is expected to generate first power by 2025 and be fully commissioned in 2026. Baltica 3 is scheduled to be completed by 2030.

PGE is also developing a third offshore wind project, the 896 MW Baltica 1, which is expected to be operational after 2030.
