Green Hydrogen Systems to provide electrolysers for H2RES project

Ørsted has chosen Denmark-based Green Hydrogen Systems (GHS) as the supplier of electrolysis technology for the H2RES offshore wind-to-hydrogen demonstration project.

The 2 MW electrolysis plant at the Avedøre Power Station will be built around GHS modular electrolysers powered by two 3.6 MW offshore wind turbines.

GHS, one of the project partners, announced that it will supply the electrolysers after Ørsted reached a final investment decision (FID) for H2RES.

“The H2RES project with Ørsted and consortium partners is a major opportunity to demonstrate how our electrolysis transforms green power to green hydrogen” , said GHS CEO Sebastian Koks Andreassen .

The H2RES plant is expected to start production in late 2021 and to produce around 1,000 kilograms of green hydrogen per day, which will be used to fuel road transport in Greater Copenhagen and on Zealand.

Along with and Green Hydrogen Systems, partners on the project include Everfuel Europe, NEL Hydrogen, DSV Panalpina, Hydrogen Denmark, and Energinet Elsystemansvar.

In December 2019, the demonstration project was awarded DKK 34.6 million (EUR 4.6 million) by the Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Programme (EUDP) under the Danish Energy Agency.

According to GHS, it is estimated that renewable hydrogen can significantly contribute to bringing down emissions from industry, transportation and buildings, which account for around 65 per cent of annual CO2 emissions in the European Union.

In July 2020, the EU adopted a hydrogen strategy which aims for 6 GW of installed renewable hydrogen capacity by 2024 and 40 GW by 2030. Currently, the are around 300 MW of installed renewable hydrogen capacity.
