Iberdrola and Vestas have signed a contract for the supply of 50 units of Vestas’s V174-9.5 MW wind turbine model for the Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm in Germany.

The contract follows the selection of Vestas (MHI Vestas) as the preferred supplier for the project in 2019 and is accompanied with a Service and Maintenance agreement.

The wind turbines will be installed on monopile foundations across an area of 40 square kilometres, located northeast of the Rügen island off the Pomeranian coast in the Baltic Sea, in water depths of between 40 and 45 metres.

The electricity produced by the wind turbines will be transferred to land from the project’s offshore substation to the onshore transmission grid in Lubmin.

Earlier this month, Iberdrola entered into agreements for Baltic Eagle’s offshore substation with the German transmission system operator 50Hertz, as well as with the Iemants-Fabricom joint venture, Heerema Marine Contractors, and Siemens Gas and Power.

Once operational in 2024, the Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm will produce around 1.9 TWh of electricity per year, enough to meet the demand of 460,000 homes and to avoid the emission of 800,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere each year.
