Gondan Shipyard has launched the first of four commissioning service operation vessels (CSOVs) it is building for Edda Wind at its yard in Figueras, Spain.

The 88.3-metre CSOV, designed by Salt Ship Design, is the first vessel in the world to use electric Voith Schneider Propellers (eVSP) and has been designed to accommodate hydrogen technology in the future.

According to Gondan, the preparations for future zero-emission hydrogen-powered propulsion systems are made possible by Enova SF funding, a Norwegian government enterprise responsible for promotion of environmentally friendly production and consumption of energy.

The CSOV has an accommodation capacity for 120 people (93 technicians and 27 crew members), a 3D motion-compensated crane, a motion compensated gangway with a maximum range of 28 metres, and an integrated elevator with a capacity for up to 26 persons.

The vessel will will be deployed on the Bard Offshore 1 wind farm in Germany, where it will support Ocean Breeze during their operation.
