Iberdrola has submitted applications for two 490 MW wind farms off Galicia, according to the local media.

The Spanish renewable energy giant filed the necessary documentation to the Ministry of the Ecological Transition on 27 May, Galiciapress reported, saying that one 490 MW wind farm is planned to be built off San Cibrao (Cervo, Lugo) and the other off San Brandán.

The move from Iberdrola comes after the company announced at the beginning of this year that it would invest in up to 2 GW of wind projects identified off the coasts of Galicia, Andalusia, and the Canary Islands – starting with a 300 MW, EUR 1 billion wind farm.

All the identified projects are planned to use floating wind technology.

The first, 300 MW project is anticipated to be operational in 2026, until when it could create 2,800 jobs per year and involve 66 technology centres and Spanish companies, with 52 of them being SMEs.

Iberdrola has one of the largest offshore wind pipelines in the market, amounting to more than 30 GW worldwide. By 2025, the company expects to reach 60 GW of installed renewable capacity worldwide, of which 4 GW will be offshore wind.
