Ørsted Ramps Up Construction Offshore Taiwan

The first batch of wind turbine foundation pin piles has been installed at the 900 MW Greater Changhua 1 & 2a wind farm offshore Taiwan, Ørsted said.

In total, 333 turbine foundation pin piles will be installed at the site located in Taiwan Strait, some 35 to 50 kilometres off Changhua County.

The pin-piles will support the wind farm’s 111 three-legged jacket foundations.

Offshore construction at Changhua 1 & 2a started earlier this year with the installation of the first of the two jacket foundations for the wind farm’s offshore substations. The work was carried out by Heerema Marine Contractors’ (HMC) vessel Aegir.

Apart from the installation of the foundations, the construction activities this year will include export and array cable laying, and the installation of the two offshore substations.

The installation of the wind farm’s 111 Siemens Gamesa 8 MW wind turbines is scheduled to start in 2022 and the wind farm is expected to be completed by the end of the same year.

The first turbine tower sections started arriving at the Port of Taichung in March.

The 605 MW Greater Changhua 1 wind farm is owned by Ørsted (50 per cent), and a consortium comprising Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ) and the Taiwanese private equity fund, Cathay PE (50 per cent).

The 295 MW Changhua 2a is owned solely by Ørsted.
