Danish Energy Agency to Meet with Potential Energy Island Bidders

The Danish Energy Agency (DEA) has invited potential bidders in the country’s yet-to-be-launched tender for an artificial energy island in the North Sea to participate in an orientation meeting related to the procurement process.

The meeting, which will be held on 15 September, is part of the second market dialogue regarding the procurement framework for the construction and co-ownership of the North Sea energy island and follows the political agreement reached on 1 September.

The orientation meeting will provide potential tenderers the opportunity to get an overview and further details of the decisions from the political agreement and will also inform the participants on the further steps towards the launch of the tender process.

Denmark reached the initial agreement on the development and construction of the energy hub in the North Sea in February.

The hub will be an artificially constructed island 80 kilometres from the shore of the peninsula Jutland.

Around 200 wind turbines with a combined capacity of 3 GW are expected to be installed in the first phase of the project and, when fully developed, the North Sea energy island hub will reach a capacity of 10 GW.

The hub will serve as an offshore power plant gathering and distributing electricity from hundreds of wind turbines directly to consumers in countries surrounding the North Sea. It is expected that the hub will also incorporate other technologies, such as green hydrogen production.
