TenneT Seeks Quality Assurance Services for BorWin5 Cable Production

TenneT has issued a tender for production monitoring and quality assurance of the cable manufacturing process for its BorWin5 offshore grid connection in Germany.

The cables will be produced by NKT, which was awarded a contract for the project in August last year. The company to be contracted under this tender will carry out the production monitoring during and after the manufacturing of the cables for the purpose of for quality assurance of the HVDC cable systems. The tender winner will provide the services as an independent third party and on behalf of the TSO at NKT’s factory in Karlskrona, Sweden.

The tender for quality assurance is open for applications until 8 October, with the contract expected to run from 4 January 2022 until 31 March 2024.

NKT will deliver a total of 230 kilometres of 320 kV high-voltage DC XLPE power cables for BorWin5 and installed them using its cable laying vessel NKT Victoria .

Starting at the offshore converter platform BorWin epsilon, the grid connection will transport electricity generated by the EnBW He Dreiht offshore wind farm through 110 kilometres of subsea cable to the landfall site in Hilgenriedersiel. From there, the electricity will be transmitted to the future converter station in Garrel/Ost through 120 kilometres of onshore cable.

The 900 MW grid connection, located off the coast of Borkum, is due to be commissioned in 2025, the same year the EnBW He Dreiht project is expected to be up and running.
