TECO to Build 1 GW+ Hai Long Onshore Substation

TECO to Build 1 GW+ Hai Long Onshore Substation

Hai Long Offshore Wind Project and TECO Electric & Machinery Co., Ltd. have signed a preferred supplier agreement for an onshore substation with an installed capacity of 1,044 MW.

This is the only onshore substation built for offshore wind farms in Taiwan that exceeds 1GW, and this collaboration marks an important milestone in Hai Long’s localization plan, the developer said.

TECO will participate in the Hai Long project as EPC Contractor for the onshore substation, including the civil and electromechanical engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning.

The onshore substation will transmit the power output from all three wind farms, the 300 MW Hai Long 2A, the 232 MW 2B, and the 512 MW Hai Long 3 to Taiwan Power Company’s substation to connect to the grid.

The grid connection for the three wind farms is expected to be commissioned in 2024. Meanwhile, Hai Long and TECO will also work together with Tier 1 and 2 suppliers and procure main power equipment from local manufacturers to fully support the goal of localization of offshore wind industry.

Hai Long 2 and 3 wind farms are located 40-50 kilometers off the coast of Changhua, with only Hai Long 2A being under Taiwan’s feed-in-tariff program and requiring localization of the components including the transformer, GIS, and switchgear of the onshore substation.

The Hai Long offshore wind project is expected to enter construction in 2023 and to be commissioned in 2025.

The wind farm is being developed by a consortium of Northland Power, Yushan Energy, and Mitsui & Co.
