Wood Thilsted to Design Foundations for 3.1 GW East Anglia Hub

Wood Thilsted has won the contract to supply the design of foundations for the East Anglia Hub offshore wind farm off England’s east coast.

The GBP 6.5 billion East Anglia Hub is made up of the East Anglia ONE North, TWO, and THREE offshore wind farms and will produce a total of 3.1GW, making it among the world’s largest offshore wind farms.

The scope for the Wood Thilsted team includes monopile and transition piece design, detailed geotechnical interpretation, and structural design across all three sites of the Hub.

The wind farm will comprise more than 200 Siemens Gamesa 14+MW offshore wind turbines installed in water depths greater than 50 metres.

”Wood Thilsted’s expertise is vital to us being able to deliver the safest and most efficient foundations for this hugely significant project,” the project director of East Anglia Hub, Ross Ovens , said.

”Design has a major bearing on costs, safety and installability so bringing in an international team that has the right level of experience – in this case with the latest generation turbines – is extremely beneficial to the future success of the East Anglia Hub.”

Construction of the East Anglia Hub is expected to begin in 2023 with completion in 2026.

Ed Crammond , director at Wood Thilsted, said: ”We are working very closely with ScottishPower Renewables which also sees the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to design in order to continuously improve LCOE (levelled energy costs) for offshore wind. Together with the parent company, Iberdrola, they are a good example for the industry.”
