CoensHexicon Awarded Four More Offshore Wind Sites in South Korea

Two provinces of South Korea have decided to grant CoensHexicon, a joint venture between Hexicon and Korean company Coens, permission to measure wind conditions in a total of four offshore areas. The permission also entails a priority right to develop offshore wind farms within the areas, according to Hexicon.

The first site includes three locations with a radius of 5 kilometres, making up a total area of 240 square kilometres. The site is located over 60 kilometres off the coast of the Yeonggwang Province in southwest Korea and in water depths form 62 75 metres. Hexicon said that the site was well-suited for its TwinWind technology.

The second site, covering approximately 80 square kilometres, is located at an area outside the city of Pohang in the Gyeongbuk Province in eastern Korea, where water depth is around 94 metres.

“The development of these areas has been going on for just over a year and the approval from the local authorities has been obtained by CoensHexicon in cooperation with Korean partners who are also joint owners in these areas”, Hexicon said on 21 October.

Swedish Hexicon and South Korean integrated service provider Coens formed the CoensHexicon joint venture company in 2018 with an aim to transfer the Hexicon floating platform technology to Korea and offer serial production of Korea-manufactured units for floating wind in the local and other agreed markets.

In 2019, CoensHexicon signed an agreement with Shell to develop, construct and operate a floating offshore wind farm in the country, and obtained a lease for an offshore project site.

Last month, the companies established the MunmuBaram joint venture to develop and operate a 1.4 GW floating wind project off the south-east coast of South Korea.

The project company is one of four partnerships and investors which signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Ulsan in 2019, aiming to build and maintain floating wind farms in the country.

A year ago, the project partners deployed an EOLOS floating LiDAR as part of a measurement campaign for the project.
