Siemens Energy will supply the high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system for the Sunrise Wind project in New York together with Aker Solutions , which revealed it had won the contract in its third quarter results earlier today. For Siemens Energy, as well as for Aker Solutions, this is the first offshore grid connection project in the United States.

In the consortium, Siemens Energy will be responsible for delivering the HVDC system on a turnkey basis and providing onshore civil work in partnership with local companies. The HVDC system consists of two converter stations, one offshore and an onshore substation.

The offshore converter station will collect the 66 kV alternating current (AC) power generated by the wind turbines and transform it to 320 kV DC for transmission through an export cable to the onshore converter station, located at Holbrook on Long Island. The onshore station will convert the power back to AC to feed it into the distribution grid which will bring the energy to homes, industry, and other end users in New York.

Aker Solutions is responsible for the offshore platform consisting of a steel jacket substructure, and a topside platform deck housing the electrical equipment.

The onshore installation of the project’s converter station will be carried out by local companies. The final deliveries are scheduled for second half of 2025, Siemens Energy said.

Siemens Energy left the contract value undisclosed, while Aker Solutions said in its Q3 results that its contract was worth NOK 2 billion (around EUR 309 million / USD 358 million).

The 924 MW Sunrise Wind offshore wind farm, which is currently undergoing federal permitting process , is developed by a joint venture between Danish clean energy company Ørsted and US-based energy provider Eversource. Located about 50 kilometres (30 miles) east of Long Island, Sunrise Wind will supply green energy to nearly 600,000 homes in New York State and support the state in meeting its 100 per cent clean electricity goal for 2040.
