With a weight of 500 tonnes, the lightweight nacelle is said to enable Siemens Gamesa to safely utilise an optimised tower and foundation substructure, compared to a heavier nacelle. According to the company, this also contributes to lowering costs per turbine, as it minimises sourced materials and reduces transportation needs.

The company started installing the prototype at the site in Denmark in September, when the wind turbine’s tower was erected. Earlier this month, Siemens Gamesa shipped out the nacelle from its plant in Brande to the test site.

The construction of the prototype wind turbine is expected to be completed soon, and the SG 14-222 DD model will be commercially available in 2024.

The model has a 14 MW capacity, reaching up to 15 MW using the company’s Power Boost function, and features a 222-metre diameter rotor, 108-metre blades, and a swept area of 39,000 square metres.

Siemens Gamesa has already signed preferred supplier agreements for the new turbine to the 300 MW Hai Long 2 project in Taiwan and the 2.6 GW Dominion Energy Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) commercial project in the US.
