EEW SPC Secures 176-Monopile Order for Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind

Rostock-based EEW Special Pipe Constructions GmbH has won a contract to manufacture 176 monopiles for Dominion Energy’s 2.6 GW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project.

EEW SPC had already delivered two monopiles for the 12 MW CVOW pilot project in April 2020, which were the first monopiles to be installed in US federal waters.

Now EEW SPC is also supplying the foundations for the 2,640 MW commercial wind farm, which is the largest currently under development in the USA.

”EEW SPC is a respected, global leader in the offshore wind industry and provided excellent support during the construction of our CVOW pilot project,” said Joshua Bennett , Dominion Energy vice president of offshore wind.

”We look forward to continuing our relationship as we move forward with the construction of our commercial project and bring utility scale offshore wind generation to our Virginia customers.”

EEW SPC will process more than 200,000 tons of steel for the 176 monopiles with a diameter of up to 9.5 meters. Production at the Rostock site is scheduled to begin in spring 2023.

”The largest wind farm in Europe to date, Hornsea 1&2, is already on top of our monopiles. Now we are pleased to announce that the largest wind farm in the USA will also be built with our foundations. With the construction of Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind, Dominion Energy is getting closer to its own voluntary goal of being carbon neutral, in terms of power generation, by 2050, and we are pleased that we can also do our part,” said Heiko Mützelburg , CEO/Managing Director of EEW SPC.

CVOW is located approximately 43 kilometers off the coast of Virginia Beach. Completion is scheduled for 2026. Once operational, CVOW will supply green energy to up to 660,000 homes per year.

The monopiles will be installed by DEME Group.
