A consortium comprising Bladt Industries and Semco Maritime has been awarded a contract for the supply of three offshore substations for the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) offshore wind farm in the US.
Under the contract for the 2,640 MW project, the consortium is in charge of the design, engineering, procurement, manufacturing and installation of three 880 MW substations.
Bladt Industries is responsible for the design, procurement and manufacturing of steel structures and jacket foundations, while the design, procurement and installation of electrical equipment, emergency systems, and inter-array cables will be managed by Semco Maritime.
The inter-array cables will be delivered by Prysmian , which won the work in a consortium with DEME Offshore.
Bladt and Semco will work on the three 880 MW offshore substations until 2025, starting this year, with the commissioning scheduled for 2026.
The contract represents the third offshore substation project for the consortium in the US and the 21st project the companies will deliver together since their first cooperation in 2003, the companies said.
Along with the substations’ steel structures and foundations, Bladt will also deliver the transition pieces for the offshore wind farm’s wind turbine foundations under a separate contract secured with the developer.
The CVOW offshore wind farm, developed by Dominion Energy, will be made up of a total of 176 Siemens Gamesa 15 MW turbines , capable of supplying clean power to as many as 660,000 households.
The project, located in federal waters some 27 miles (43.5 kilometres) offshore Virginia, is now undergoing federal permitting process and, if approved, will enter construction in 2024 and become operational in 2026.
