GDG to Work on Hai Long Offshore Substation Design

A consortium consisting of Semco Maritime and PTSC M&C has appointed Irish offshore engineering company Gavin & Doherty Geosolutions (GDG) to conduct the basic and detailed engineering for geotechnical and seismic design for both offshore substations of the Hai Long offshore wind project in Taiwan.

The design work is expected to be completed Q2/Q3 of 2022, GDG said.

The PTSC-Semco consortium signed a preferred supplier agreement for the project’s two offshore substations in October last year. Under the agreement, the consortium is responsible for the design, engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of the two offshore substations, including jacket foundations, which will be manufactured at PTSC M&C’s yard facilities in Vungtau, Vietnam.

“This project marked our continuing journey in the Taiwan market, and we believe that there is great potential for offshore wind in the comings years in this region”, said Paul Doherty , Managing Director of Gavin & Doherty Geosolutions, which has been involved in the project since 2019.

In 2020, GDG won a contract to provide geotechnical and geophysical Owners Engineering services for the 1,044 MW Hai Long 2 and 3 offshore wind farms.

The 1,044 MW Hai Long offshore wind farm, located 50 kilometres off the coast of Changhua county, will be developed in three stages, with construction expected to begin in 2023.

Offshore installation of the substations is planned for 2024 and the completion of commissioning for 2026, when the last phase of the Hai Long project is scheduled to be ready for operation.

Once fully up and running in 2026, the Hai Long offshore wind project is expected to power 1.55 million households in Taiwan.
