Photos Reveal Damage to Offshore Substation Jacket Hit by Drifting Cargo Ship

Transmission system operator TenneT has shared photos showing the damage done to the jacket foundation of the Hollandse Kust Zuid Beta offshore substation following a collision with an out-of-control cargo ship Julietta D during Storm Corrie.

As reported, the bulk carrier Julietta D drifted for hours in the Hollandse Kust Zuid wind farm offshore the Netherlands on 31 January after the vessel had become adrift in an anchorage area north of the 1.5 GW wind farm.

TenneT said that there had been no people working on the jacket foundation at the moment of the collision.

The company added that the scenarios of the foundations being hit by vessels of a certain size are taken into consideration during the design and construction process.

The photos show that the jacket has dents and that the cable deck (platform) is damaged at one corner.

TenneT will now inspect the damage to the jacket underwater and above water on site.

”We expect to have a clear idea of the exact damage to the jacket at the beginning of March so that we can make a plan for the necessary repairs,” TenneT said in a statement.

The 1.5 GW Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind farm will have two offshore substations, Hollandse Kust Zuid Alpha and Hollandse Kust Zuid Beta, with the Hollandse Kust Zuid Alpha already installed in December 2021.

The jacket foundation of the Hollandse Kust Zuid Beta substation was installed in June 2021, while the topside is scheduled to be installed later this year.
