GE Renewable Energy and Hyundai Electric & Energy Systems are planning to establish a strategic industrial partnership to support the growth of offshore wind in South Korea.
The two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to form the strategic offshore wind partnership in South Korea on Wednesday, 16 February.

South Korea has set a goal of scaling up its offshore wind capacity to up to 12 GW by 2030 and achieving 30 per cent of renewables in the energy production mix by the end of the decade.
”The companies’ strengths complement each other, and both will bring our unique expertise to support the development and installation of the 12 GW of offshore wind forecasted to be built in South Korea by 2030,” Jan Kjaersgaard , CEO of Offshore Wind at GE Renewable Energy said in a social media post.
Kjaersgaard added that GE Renewable Energy will bring its offshore expertise and the Haliade-X wind turbine technology to the mix, with Hyundai Electric bringing its local expertise and electrical equipment.
”GE and Hyundai Electric & Energy Systems Co., Ltd. will intensify the work to prepare and deploy our industrial plan, and we look forward to sharing further details on the next steps from an industry standpoint in line with customer commitments during the remainder of 2022. This initial step signals our common and strong commitment to growing offshore wind in South Korea,” added Kjaersgaard.
The MoU sets out initial plans for the construction of a nacelle assembly factory for Haliade-X turbines in South Korea, with a detailed timeline of any industrial development depending on ”the volume of customers’ orders and their specific projects timing” , Kjaersgaard said.
”South Korea has a great offshore wind future ahead and we are delighted to be signing a MOU with Hyundai Electric & Energy Systems Co., Ltd. to find ways to set up an efficient supply chain for our Haliade-X,” GE Renewable Energy said in a social media post.
”One of the keys to success to continue building the offshore wind industry is the collaboration between key industrial players with complementary capabilities.”
