Steelwind Ships Out First XXL Monopiles for Arcadis Ost 1

The first three XXL monopiles for the 257 MW Arcadis Ost 1 offshore wind farm have set sail from Steelwind Nordenham’s fabrication plant to the Port of Roenne, the marshalling harbor for the project.

Located northeast of the island of Rügen in German Baltic Sea, Arcadis Ost 1 comprises 27 wind turbines and one offshore substation which require 28 monopiles in total.

The remaining 25 monopiles will be transported to the Port of Roenne on Denmark’s Bornholm Island over the next few months, Steelwind Nordenham said.

According to the company, the substation monopile, which is one of the first to be transported, weighs just over 2,100 tonnes, measures 110 metres, and has a diameter of 9.6 metres, making it “one of the biggest” monopiles in offshore wind history and “the biggest” in Europe.

The turbines’ monopiles weigh 2,000 tonnes each, measure 100 metres, and have a diameter of 9.4 metres.

Steelwind Nordenham started fabricating the monopiles in August 2021.

“The successful load-out of the first monopiles sets our installation schedule in motion. After more than two years of preparation, planning and a successful collaboration with our partners, we are impatiently anticipating the beginning of installation activities in the Baltic Sea ,” said Wim Verrept , Arcadis Ost 1 Project Director.

Installation to Begin in May

DEME’s heavy-lift floating installation vessel Orion is in the final stages of preparation for the Arcadis Ost 1 project and will be ready to begin installing the monopiles in May later this year.

“Being able to handle and install Monopiles of this large size will play a huge role in the further cost cutting of offshore wind costs and as DEME Offshore we are thrilled to be a leader in this evolution,” said Bart de Poorter , General Manager DEME Offshore.

The monopiles for the wind turbines are not equipped with common transition pieces but have a direct connection with the turbine tower.

Arcadis Ost 1 will comprise 27 MHI Vestas V174-9.5MW wind turbines installed using the floating turbine installation method, an industry’s first.

The wind farm is scheduled to be fully commissioned in 2023.
