Following the Polish Government’s switch of the location for the country’s offshore wind installation terminal from the Port of Gdynia to the Port of Gdańsk, the latter launched a competition procedure for leasing an area within the administrative boundaries of the Port and the construction of the installation terminal.
Initial offers will be accepted until 8 June, while the deadline for submitting binding offers will be set to three months from the date of the completion of the first stage of the procedure.
From the perspective of the development of the offshore wind energy sector in Poland, the timeliness of this investment is important, according to the Port of Gdańsk, which said the location of the installation terminal guarantees that the first phase of the offshore sector development will be ready by 1 June 2025.
Poland procured almost 5.9 GW of offshore wind capacity via Contracts for Difference (CfDs) in the first half of 2021 for projects in the most advanced stages of development, some of which could be operational by 2025.
According to Polish media reports from last year, after the government opted for the Port of Gdynia, offshore wind developers voiced concerns over the Port of Gdynia’s timely readiness for the construction of the planned large-scale projects.
Earlier this month, the Polish Council of Ministers adopted a resolution changing the location of the installation terminal for offshore wind farms, indicating that the Outer Port in Gdańsk meets all the criteria of industry investors.
Łukasz Greinke, president of the Port of Gdańsk, said the Port wanted to meet the expectations and that this could only take place through a public selection procedure and it therefore decided to launch the tender.
“We have already received a positive opinion of the Supervisory Board and published a competition procedure on 8 March 2022. We will create conditions for the installation terminal to be built in the Port of Gdańsk” , Łukasz Greinke said.
