Extended Rotra Mare Back in Action

Siemens’ roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) vessel Rotra Mare has completed her first delivery of wind turbine components since being upgraded and extended to be able to transport the ever-increasing turbine parts.

The vessel, which docked at Sif’s new terminal at Maasvlakte 2 on Wednesday 09 March, transported tower sections for Vattenfall’s 1.5 GW Hollandse Kust Zuid wind farm offshore the Netherlands.

Holland Shipyards Group completed the upgrade of the Ro-Ro vessel a few days ago by extending the vessel from 141.6 metres to 153.2 metres. To achieve that, a new section was built.

While the Rotra Mare was undergoing construction, Holland Shipyards Group was also working on the conversion of its sister vessel, the Rotra Vente, which is expected to enter service in March 2022.

Located some 20 kilometres off the Dutch province of Zuid-Holland, the Hollandse Kust Zuid wind farm zone occupies an area of 235.8 square kilometres, where Vattenfall, together with BASF , is building what will become the largest operating offshore wind farm once commissioned.

Installation of the monopile foundations at the wind farm started in July 2021.

The project includes 140 Siemens Gamesa 11 MW wind turbines the production of which started in August 2021.

The wind turbines are expected to be erected and commissioned by the summer of 2023.
