Van Oord’s wind turbine installation vessel Boreas will be the first to feature Wärtsilä’s dedicated fuel supply system for methanol, MethanolPac.
The MethanolPac will complement the Wärtsilä 32 Methanol engine which will also debut on Van Oord’s mega jack-up ordered at Yantai CIMC Raffles shipyard in China.
MethanolPac includes both the low- and high-pressure parts of the fuel supply system as well as the related control and safety functions, Wärtsilä said. This includes the high-pressure Methanol Fuel Pump Unit, low-pressure pump module, fuel valve train, bunkering stations, and tank instrumentation.
”MethanolPac will reassure ship owners who may not know where to turn for help designing their methanol fuel and power system,” said Mathias Jansson , Director, Fuel Gas Supply Systems, Wärtsilä Marine Power.

Designed by Knud E Hansen, Boreas will be capable of installing wind turbines with a capacity of up to 20 MW.
The 175-metre offshore installation vessel will be purpose-built for the transport and installation of foundations and wind turbines. With a crane supplied by the Dutch company Huisman , the jack-up will be able to lift more than 3,000 tonnes.
The vessel will also feature an advanced jacking system. Four legs, each measuring 126 metres, will allow the ship to be jacked up and work in waters up to 70 metres deep.
Boreas is expected to enter the market in 2024 and will work under the Dutch flag. Van Oord has also taken an option on a second vessel.
