The first offshore wind farm built in Italy – and the first such project in the Mediterranean – has been completed, commissioned and inaugurated in Taranto.

The developer Renexia and its partners yesterday (21 April) held a ceremony in the Port of Taranto to celebrate the commissioning and inauguration of the 30 MW Beleolico offshore wind farm, which features ten MySE3.0-135 wind turbines delivered by MingYang Smart Energy and installed by Van Oord.

The first wind turbine was installed at the project site in February, with four 3 MW units in place by mid-March and seven earlier this month.

For MingYang, this was the first offshore wind turbine order in Europe and, according to the company, this was also the first time a Chinese OEM supplied turbines for the European offshore wind market.

Located in Italy’s Apulia Region near the Taranto harbour, the 30 MW offshore wind farm will provide about 55,600 MWh of electricity per year, enough to meet the demand of around 18,500 households.
