Enefit Green Ramps Up Work on Developing 1.1 GW Estonian Project

Enefit Green has contracted Ramboll for a preliminary design of the Hiiu offshore wind farm in Estonia, with the technical analysis of the project scheduled to be completed in August this year. Meanwhile, the environmental impact assessment for the up to up to 1.1 GW offshore wind farm is also near completion.

As part of the work on the preliminary design, Ramboll will analyse alternative wind turbine options as well as substation and connection cable solutions.

The design also includes specifying the possibilities and needs of nearby ports during construction and maintenance.

“The design will not provide definitive answers, but proposes solutions that are both technically and environmentally sound. This information is important for the developer, the authorities as well as potential partners among entrepreneurs” , said Karmo Kõrvek , Offshore Wind Development Manager at Enefit Green.

The preliminary design will also provide input in terms of technical solutions to the ongoing environmental impact assessment, which is also analysing different types of wind turbines.

“Hiiu park would be in construction phase by 2030, therefore it is important for all research and analysis to be based on the newest possible technology. Developing an offshore wind farm takes a long time but is also a very strong step on our journey to zero, as the production of even one offshore wind farm would cover half of Estonia’s electricity consumption” , Karmo Kõrvek said.

Work on the Hiiu (or Loode-Eesti) offshore wind project, planned for the Baltic Sea waters some 12 kilometres north of Estonia’s second largest island Hiiumaa, started in 2006 and the environmental impact assessment programme begun in 2010.

The project, which is planned to have 74 wind turbines of 15 MW of capacity each, was initially developed by Nelja Energia which signed a cooperation agreement on the project with the Hiiu municipality on the Hiiumaa Island in 2017. The company was acquired by Enefit Green the following year.

In 2021, Enefit Green also entered into an agreement with Ørsted to establish a joint venture for the development of offshore wind in the Baltics, including the Liivi project in the Estonian part of the Gulf of Riga.
