North Sea Energy Island

Ørsted and ATP have appointed Arup as Technical Advisor for the North Sea Energy Island project in Denmark, the world’s first artificial energy island. “For some time, Arup has been supporting Ørsted + ATP in creating a vision for a viable artificial energy island that will drive positive change. We are proud to be part of a project that will not only redefine the future for a greener Europe, but also help us transition out of fossil fuels and towards sustainable energy sources” , said Arup’s Director and Copenhagen Office Leader, Christian Allison.

The North Sea Energy Island is expected to be tendered in 2023, when Ørsted and ATP intend to bid to build the project.

In September 2021, the Ørsted + ATP consortium entered into agreements with Aarsleff, Bouygues, and Van Oord to support the energy island project, saying the three companies would bring extensive design and engineering competences as well as vast experience from complex offshore construction projects around the globe..

The North Sea Energy Island will be built some 80 kilometres off the coast of Denmark. Surrounded by ten offshore wind farms, it is intended to collect and distribute huge amounts of green energy to Denmark, and into Europe.

Around 200 wind turbines with a combined capacity of 3 GW are expected to be installed in the first phase of the project by 2030. When fully developed, the energy island hub will reach a capacity of 10 GW.

The energy island will play a key role in helping Europe phase out fossil fuels, accelerating the green transformation, according to Ørsted + ATP.
