Falck Renewables and BlueFloat Energy have submitted an application for a maritime concession for a site off the northeastern coast of Sardinia, where the two companies plan to build a 975 MW floating wind farm, called Tibula Energia.

The companies, which formed a partnership to develop floating wind projects in Italy last year, filed a request for a maritime concession on 6 May, with the authorisation process at the Ministry of Ecological Transition to begin in the next few weeks.

The wind farm is planned to comprise 62 floating wind turbines, installed between 25 and 40 kilometres from the coast, and is expected to have an annual production of more than 3.4 TWh, equivalent to the consumption of over 900,000 households.

Exploratory research into local sea and wind conditions, environmental impacts and industrial infrastructures has been underway over the past twelve months, according to Falck and BlueFloat, which now also launched consultation with the community on the northeastern coast of the Italian island.

This March, Falck Renewables and BlueFloat Energy secured a 40-year maritime concession for the 1,350 MW Odra Energia floating wind project offshore off the southern coast of the province of Lecce in Italy.

The Odra Energia wind farm will have 90 wind turbines installed in the Ionian Sea, between 12 kilometres and 24 kilometres off the south-eastern coast of the Puglia Region.

Along with Tibula Energia and Odra Energia, the two partners have four more floating wind projects under development in Italy: the 675 MW Minervia Energia wind farm in the Gulf of Squillace, the 1.4 GW Nora Energia 1 and 2 wind farms in the Gulf of Cagliari, and the 1.2 GW Kailia Energia off Brindisi.
