The 1.1 GW Seagreen offshore wind farm has reached a significant milestone with the installation of approximately 19 kilometres of onshore cabling that will connect the GBP 3 billion project to the Scottish national grid.

The onshore cable route runs between landfall at the coast of Carnoustie and the wind farm’s new substation at Tealing airfield from where it then connects to the existing adjacent SSEN Tealing substation.

“ This has been a massive feat of engineering and has included 117 individual cables being installed along the route and has involved crossing the East Coast Main Line, the A90 and the A92 and managing the works to minimise any impact to the Carnoustie and Panmure golf courses”, said Steven Reid , Seagreen’s onshore project manager.

“This was a key activity of the Seagreen Project to prepare for the export of first power this summer and we would like to take this opportunity to thank the teams involved, the landowners; and the local residents for the patience and understanding shown while this work was undertaken”.

Landfall works at Carnoustie were completed earlier this year and since then the project has also successfully completed the second of three cable pulls at landfall to support the connection of the offshore cables to the onshore cables.

Offshore, the installation of the first of three export cables for the Seagreen offshore wind farm, performed by Nexans, started at the beginning of this year.

The Seagreen Wind Farm, a joint venture between SSE Renewables and Total, is located 27 kilometres off the coast of Angus in the North Sea.

Once fully commissioned in 2024, the 114-turbine wind farm will be Scotland’s largest and the world’s deepest offshore wind farm.
